A huge improvement and price drop in storage solutions would have to come along as well. As others have pointed out - handling, storing and printing large files quickly becomes the digital equivalent of setting up a darkroom. More folks thought it an interesting thing to try than actually kept them up and running. Storing a bunch of 4 or 5MP jpgs, and printing them off your inkjet printer as a 4x6 is considerably different than working with 14MP raw files.
