In the simplest terms I would refer to photography of events intended for timely publication in periodicals as photojournalism. This work would also qualify as documentary photography. However, documentary photography may also include work documenting things and / or events which would not qualify for timely publication in periodicals. Both terms, I believe, imply the honest, unmanipulated documenting of real life. My 2 cents.
