Ted You are right and this is quite true! I have a "small" experience with wides... 12mm CV, 14mm Canon, 15mm Nikon and 16mm CZ Hologon...(Not including 16-35, 17-35 and 21-35 zooms). And the CV (Heliar) is astounding. Such a little distortion! Nobody had to speak or criticize them before testing the lenses. This lens has the best output/cost ratio of all the family though the best overall quality could be the Hologon. A strong vignetting is inherent with this kind of lens and cannot be avoided whatever was the construction formula. But a filter may correct the situation or just closing the diaphragm as much as possible. And the interior pictures are incredible. I cannot find in my shoeboxes archival system some pictures I took many years ago in the Vatican interior with the excellent Canon 14mm but they were really spectacular. All this kind of lenses are truly difficult to use but when you get them really they are worth... And yes...the Heliar is the best if you mind the cost and anyway is the only true extreme wide you can use in the M system!
