My approach to Jobo developing should i choose to accept it which i don't yet is to dilute as much as possible. I think that is what they would tell you over there in Jobo land. I've glanced at their website and talked to likes of Jobo users. JUG. It's the only way to counteract continuous agitation. A problem being you are working at the same dilutions as the people who don't continuously agitate. And they are going to get a hell of a lot more tonal compensation the you are. And your prints get compared against theirs. I started out with all my pals in the 70's going 1:100 and you get a glow in the highlights which is really nice. I would do that with the Jobo as your developing times are not so much a problem as they are shortened and automatic. My ADD gets me when I go over 20 minutes a little bell goes off and i have no idea what I'm doing standing there in the darkroom. Your results may vary. You'll get less grain at 1:75 and 1:50 but progressively less Rodinal "magic" I'm at 1:50 now. With many films 6x9s give you not tremendous grain statements. ...at those dilutions with Rodinal. By the way if you LOVE grain try it with T-Max 3200 at 1600 it looks like an amazing mezzo screen even at 6x9! I hide those because every time a prospective client sees them they ask for it and I've gotten sick of it. "You want grain like that we can do it in software" I say and some day I'll mean it. 1:100 gives you incredibly EVEN and sharp grain. When you go back to D76 or other more standard developers if you ever do it's like you've coated your lens with a quarter inch thick coat of Vaseline. The lack of clarity is completely disconcerting. We rush back to Rodinal. Clean our lenses which are already clean. Xtol does not have the grain effect it has amazingly fine or compleat lack of grain. We expect to see this with fine grain developers which are normally very unsharp with the exception of Pyro. But the sharpness is there WITH the lack of grain. Getting ones cake and eating it too. A previous impossibility. By the way Rodinal at 1:25 has NO Rodinal magic and you might as well be using D76 1:1 the results look identical to it. The only people I've ever heard of using that dilution are in the internet. Not in real life thank goodness!
