Marc,

I believe that there is an article on infinity focus in the current issue of Popular Photography.  It explains why telephoto lenses have this feature a bunch better than could I.  Check it out.

I focused on a mountain ridge that is 13 miles away - that is as close 
to infinity as I can get since the moon is not out...
