Check out Erwin Puts' comments at his web site, he actually goes into some detail with this. However, quite frankly the new 280mm APO-Telyt R is as good as anything Leica has ever done, M or R. Canon is another story. Some would say the old Canon SSC breech lock lenses are better than anything later, including the L's. The build quality of the SSC lenses is definitely top notch.
