It think I would be reassured by having the ability to hand crank my
car if need be.

I owned (it owned me?)  a Westerly 30 Sailboat with a Volvo Diesel
Auxiliary that could be hand-cranked.  It was easier to hand crank the
thing than to run the umbilical cord to the shore power to keep the
batteries charged.
