The Hansa group made money out of picking up things cheap and then exporting them expensively. I suppose that we might call it a "cartel" today (sp?). Lübeck made it's money on three things in particular: herring, salt and wine. So even if northern Germany isn't a wine district, there is a lot of stored knowledge and tradition when it comes to wine. This particular wine came from Chile. I'm a little picky when it comes to wines, but their winemaster did a good job in selecting their house wine. It was excellent. A little heavy (you needed a heavier wine to cut through the fat :) ) but full-bodied. It reminded me of a good Rioja ... somewhere between a good Rioja and a good year of South African Pinotage. My wife has the note with the label and year. I can get back on that later. Now for the REAL reason of driving down to Lübeck ... A bunch of friends are coming over on Saturday evening and I would like to treat them to everything ... food, wine, spirits (the last two are not the usual Scandinavian custom ... none of us get paid THAT much). Wine cost 1/3 of the Swedish price in Lübeck ... and as I said earlier ... there was no lack of experts to make recommendations :) Daniel On Mon, 3 Mar 2003, Seth Rosner wrote: > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Daniel Ridings" <daniel.ridings@muspro.uio.no> > > > The alternative is my birthday meal: > > > > http://geocities.com/daniel_ridings/paw2003/9alt1.html > > > > Daniel > > Finished breakfast just a while ago, Daniel.
