There are, of course, varying degrees of valuation, whether it be emotional, monetary, status, convenience etc. Some people won't have their dog "repaired", and some will spend anything to. Some people don't appreciate Leicas, and could do just as well with a P&S. There are few circumstances where one REALLY NEEDS a Leica, IMO. Leicas are, for most of us, disposable income. For some Leicas are their source of investment, or their tool for their trade. Except for those, that makes them hard to compare to other things that are far more necessity. BTW, I do not believe college is a "right", and am miffed that so many people believe it is.
