I tend to use it with the slowest, finest-grained slide film that I can get my hands on, Kodachrome 25 (sadly discontinued, but I have a generous stash in the freezer). But if you want to see if it is worth for you to get into the R system, you should follow Don's advice and shoot the kind of pictures you usually shoot and then see if you can identify an improvement over your Nikon glass.
