As a long time (29 years) teacher, I have seen the schools being told to take on more and more responsibility that belongs to the parents. It sounds like you are a good parent who is doing their job, but look around... The only requirement for being a parent is either eggs or sperm. So, society says, "I know where we can teach values and social skills - at school. After all, teachers love kids or they wouldn't be doing their job, since God knows the could earn more money elsewhere. So, we'll have them teach Johnny and Susie how to be model citizens, and by the way, you better also teach them the basics." I for one would like to have the quality of student I once had. Schools cannot and should not be put into this position, because they will fail. And then we get blamed for not doing the impossible. When I hear about the homelife of some of my students I just want to cry, grab them and take them home. But I have to try my best to reach them and teach them some science, as that is what I was hired to do, and what I desired to do when I first thought about being a teacher in 4th grade. Sorry, I just got out of a day long meeting on accreditation for our school and I am frustrated. All the nonsense jargon and hoops to jump through. AAARRRRGGGG.
