My experience is that Vuescan produces a scan that doesn't look that great in its raw form, but does preserve all the information, which can then be modified in Photoshop. Nikonscan produces a scan which looks better "out of the box", but which often seems to clip shadow detail, resulting in an inferior scan. Bottom line, I stick to Vuescan these days.
