Having had skateboarders in and out of my house for the past 15 years or so - from the level of goofy kids to semi-pros and pros - I'll say I'd much rather have my kids hang out and around with skateboarders than with any kind of socially acceptable high-school/college jock types - i.e., football players, hockey players, basketball players, etc. When was the last time you read a news story about a group of skateboarders at a house party getting into a brawl in which, for example, someone was stomped, shot or killed? When was the last time you read a news story about a carload of skateboarders, drunk out of their minds, running into a family with young children? When was the last time you read about a group of skateboarders involved in a rape, gang or otherwise? Yes, skateboarders wear ludicrously baggy clothes, are often tattooed, and may annoy you by skating with their boards on "your sidewalk." But I would suggest that serious skateboarders get into less serious trouble than their jock peers, do less binge drinking, and tend not to do allot of drugs - you CAN'T skateboard stoned. Yes, many skateboarders are blue collar kids, outsiders, but they are kids with an outlet that keeps them out of doors, physically active, and out of other trouble. I have skateboarders at my family table every Thanksgiving and Christmas, and have had them crashing in my home for various lengths of time - one for a year - and find them to be nice, polite, fun kids. So there. B. That's my skateboarder kid - unfortunately - who you're talking > about!! :-) Puts me in mind of this joke -- actually told me by a snowboarder, I guess 'cause they relish that special rebel image: Q: What's the difference between a snowboard and a vacuum cleaner?
