They are terrific scanners - and I believe that they're selling new for
a bit under $1200...

Yes.  Get a Polaroid SprintScan+.  There are other scanners out there
that are comparable made by Nikon, but the LED light source in them
makes me not recommend them.  You can probably get a hell of a deal on
one these days, and it's an exceptional scanner.
