Kodachromes can be difficult to scan because they have a very long range of densities.  If you don't want your shadow detail to turn in to noise, you need a scanner with high DMax more than one with lots of dpi.  Avoid the HP Photosmart: it's OK with negatives and E6 films but with Kodachromes you will lose your shadow detail to noise and moire patterns.
