(Wide > open?) The 35 does an Ok job, but your subject needs to be closer to the camera than the objects you are trying to isolate. At 1-3m, it's pretty easy, I am finding. The 28, I think, would be a lost cause; you are using a wider lens with a smaller aperture. It's tough to shoot with a 28 up close, too.
