Hi Julian,
I do not consciously go for a soft look but because of film/scanner, or
whatever, that is what I usually end up with.  I do not do much manipulation
after scanning, not that I am against that, but because I am satisfied with
the way things turn out. Basically I prefer to leave well alone and don't
alter the image for incremental improvements. However, if I think major
improvement can be made by alterations I can hack away with the best of them
:-)
