Subject: [Leica] infinity lock on 50 cron collapsible

i am wondering what is the purpose of the infinity lock on the 50mm
summicron collapsible?  never having used an optic of this era, was
the infinity lock common to other lenses, or is it an artifact of the 
collapsibility of this little gem?
