Hi David, 
I had the same problem with my Motor-Winder R8, on a view spots the
rubber coating got lose.
Once a dealer told me he stopped putting pricelabels on the winders.
Because when he removed these labels
he also removed the coating... But this was only on the very first
winders.

My R8 malfunctioned after an intercontinental airtrip. The meteringcell
(used for selective metering) on the mirror moved out of his fitting.
I suppose this was caused by the fibrations in the airplane, in the
freightcompartment. Next time I keep my gear in the cabin, like I used
to do. 

I use my Leica R8 now for almost 2 years professionaly, without any
complaints.
