If the Nikon SLR user wants a 35 1.4 lens he has one choice - the lens you tested. But that lens does nothing for the Leica owner. The Leica owner has a choice - the 35 1.4 Summilux, or the newer 35 1.4 Summilux ASPH. And what the lenses do at 2.8 is pretty close to totally irrevelvant - or even at f 2 for that matter, as there are any number of choices in the old 35 Summicron family - and there's the new Summicron ASPH. But if you need 1.4, that's what you need to be comparing - performance at 1.4. B. They are equivalent in contrast and resolution from f2.8 on. At f2.0 they are virtually equivalent -- the lux is a little softer in the corners. At f1.4 I tested the 35 Lux non-ASPH against the legendary Nikkor 35 f1.4 AIS. The Leica lens is clearly superior in contrast and resolution to this great Nikkor. The 35 Lux non-ASPH does flare with the sun directly in the picture frame, the 35 Sum non-ASPH handles the sun well; hence, I don't use the 35 Lux non-ASPH to shoot into the sun. I always use the 35 Lux non-ASPH wide-open when I want the romantic effect (glowing highlights) generated by its spherical construction. This effect at f1.4 may not be the ultimate in sharpness and contrast (although it is better than the Nikkor 1.4), but the effect is quite beautiful -- superior to what a softar filter on an ASPH lens can produce. Again, I hope my subjectly objective tests help inform the debate. Tom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
