Optimum aperture is f/4 - wide open. If I recall correctly, Erwin Puts acknowledges that the new 135/3.4 APO outperforms the Tele-Elmar only at full aperture. The 135/4 Elmar that preceded the Tele-Elmar is also an excellent lens optically, physically longer than the Tele-Elmar but perceptibly lighter.
