I just finished a brief stint with the PhotoCal software and monitor spyder. Apparently my monitor is too old ( >3 years) to calibrate accurately. The hardware/software combination works well except the settings it established resulted in prints that were much farther off my monitor than my previous eyeball method.

The eyeball method works best with a calibrated output device. I'm using WCi's LightJet 430 <www.westcoastimaging.com> for my calibrated output.

The procedure:

1) Using Adobe Gamma, make a rough adjustment of contrast, brightness and gamma for the three colors.

2) Using Photoshop, make whatever adjustments to make the image look the way it oughtta.

3) order test print

4) look at test print, weep. Without changing the image file, open the file in Photoshop, then open Adobe Gamma and adjust brightness, contrast and gamma for each color so that the image on your screen matches the calibrated print.

5) order new print. This one should be much better than the first one, if not exactly what you want.

It's not perfect but Rich Seiling (sp?) of WCi tells me he still tweaks the file based on a test print before making final prints, even with calibrated monitors.
