With an SL use the ground glass(It's really a very fine micropism) look at what is important to be in focus and bring the lens in from infinity to the point that the subject looks crisp, take the picture. If you are nervous about this, then in the comfort of your home focus on something, mark the lens with a pencil, defocus and try again. You will find that with some practice you will be pretty consistent, not perfect, but usually within DOF. With that said, it's easier with an M.
