Ken Lassiter, Boynton Beach, FL Leica increases after-tax profit Leica Camera AG, Solms, Germany, posted a first-quarter after-tax profit of euro 160,000, up from euro 136,000 for the prior year. According to PMA European Newsline, the turnover from April to June decreased by 5.6 percent to euro 34.2 million while the expenses for research and development went up from euro 168,000 to euro 1.6 million. Starting the new fiscal year, Leica plans to launch strategic new products, particularly in sport optics and digital compact cameras. The operating result reached euro 204,000, compared with euro 221,000 in the same period last year. Sales of SLR camera systems declined 3 percent to euro 15.8 million. Cameras and lenses of the Leica M-System as well as the Leica 0 edition developed positively, with 4,000 units of the historical camera model sold. Sales of compact cameras fell back 44.2 percent to euro 3.2 million. With an increase of 26.1 percent to euro 7.9 million, sport optics showed a positive development. By region, turnover in Europe declined by 12 percent to euro 17.5 million. The German market was down 6.6 percent to euro 8.9 million, but is still more stable than other European markets. Particularly the significant development in China and Korea led to an increase of 25.4 percent to euro 7.5 million in the Australasian region.
