Read a review in a german magazine "colorfoto" issue 8/2001 over the leica 2.8/280 modular system. According to this magazine the results of their tests were as follows. Best 300/2.8 Zeiss Tele-Apotessar (86 points out of a possible 100), this lens is twice the price of the leica 2.8/280. Then Nikkor AF-S 2.8/300 II (85 points), followed by Pentax SMC-FA 2.8/300 ED-IF (84 points), then came sigma EX 2,8/300 HSM IF apo (83points), Next was Tamaron AF 2.8/300 SP LD (81 points) then Leica Apo-Telyt-R 2.8/280 modular (80) points. Canon, and Tokina lenses also scored 80 points, The Minolta AF apo 2.8/300 scored the lowest with 79 points. The Leica apo-Telyt-R 4/280 was by far the best in it's class (f4.0 or slower) but is twice as expensive as the next best lens (canon). Similar results for the leica Apo-telyt-R 2.8/400 modular. In this class of lens the canon was by far the best (according to colorfoto) and the leica was not much better then the worst in the group of lenses tested.
Have no idea how good/bad this magazine is at testing lenses. Maybe LUGgers will write volumes as to why these tests/this magazine should be ignored.
