You register with Leica as a pro user and meet certain criteria they set -
just as Nikon and Canon do

And even though I wasn't registered as a pro with them (nor did I live in
the US, but Canada) Leica USA worked hard to get me a replacement M6 when
mine died in Nicaragua. The problem was the amount I was going to have to
pay to Nicaraguan customs for the replacement - so we didn't do it in the
end.

As for backup camera, I live and work in the Canadian sub-arctic - there is
no such thing as a quick turnaround on anything - courier to anywhere is 2-3
days if you are lucky and will cost an arm and a leg. Summer dust and winter
cold are hard on any camera (as well as batteries dying and/or shutters and
lenses seizing up in the cold) so, as a pro I ALWAYS have backups. I'd be
screwed if I tried setting up with one camera - N***n (which I use) Olympus
(which I have used), Leica, Toyo, Deardorff or whatever...
