The optices are the same, but the retractable is very convenient when carrying and when you want to purt the camera in a jacket pocket, or want a compact package! The only down side I can think of is that you might forget to pull it out and lock it! That did happen to me a couple of times when I first started to use one (and Elmar!) but that phase passes rather quickly!! If you worry about weight, I imagine that the retractable lenses are a bit lighter, as well! :o) but at 300+ pounds, I can't really tell any difference when I carry mine!! Enjoy!
