I was going to suggest the Melian dialog as a good reading assignment.
Not the earliest example of war carried out against innocents, perhaps.
But one of the best documented.

One thing about the invention of small cameras like Leicas is that they
helped explode once and for all the stupid myth that wars were ever
directed solely at military targets.
