In terms of the way war was waged WWII marked a substantial departure from previous wars, a trend which continues today where economic war is waged against civilians with embargoes. Certainly armies fought armies in WWII - what was different was the wide-scale use of arms against civilians. No one is suggesting any diminishment of sacrifice made by those who served. But the meaning of the way war was waged changed dramatically. Don't be so damn politically correct. Adam Bridge
