By total coincidence I took a similar picture in Paris about a week ago: http://www.smallevents.com/doggie.html It didn't come out as nice as yours, but the situation is similar. I had to Photoshop it a lot to get this poodle out of the deep shadows, and it is still buried in the overall photo. What looks like vignetting isn't; that's just the way the scene was lit (there was a pool of indirect light right near the dog, and deeper shadows around it).
