One local store that had them no longer displays them on the shelf (in
Ottawa, Canada). I just saw a web ad that says their batteries are
"final manufacturing run". Did the global production of these batteries
just cease?"

Yes, all manufacture has ended wordwide. They're still easy to find in
Europe, but obviously the supply will dry up eventually.

Your options are:

1) Buy some now (they keep for ages). In the UK
http://www.pcs-chromex-batteries.com/batts.htm is one source.

2) Use the PX625A 'replacement' which is 1.5V not 1.35V and have the meter
recalibrated if this is possible.

3) Use the 1.4V Zinc Air cell and be prepared to replace them very
frequently.

4) Buy the adaptor that lets you use silver batteries instead, see
http://www.criscam.com/mr9b.htm

So there are some options, it really isn't a problem.

(Oh and you mmight add Leicameter MR4 and Canonette GIII users to your list)
