I remember reading, a long time ago, the following information. Leitz wanted the photographer using such a setup to be able to get as much information as possible, regarding the camera s settings, when he (no PC bull....) looked at the camera s top plate. Remember the aperture setting of the venerable Elmar 50mm, you must look at the front of the lens. The problem was that photographers using a long nose viewfinder (the VIOOH?) would not be able to see at which distance the lens was focused since the area would be covered by the finder.
