Trish,

"How to keep negs organized?" is a very good question. I'd be interested in
hearing how other people answer that.

I create a digital thumbnail file for each roll of negatives. I save the
index file under the same name as the roll number, which is generated by my
lab. I file the physical negs by roll number. I put the digital files on a
CD. I can fit about 80 thumbnail files on a CD. The thumbnails can be
reviewed quickly. I try and enter a description and some key words in a
database, along with the roll number. But I haven't been doing that very
well.

The thumbnails are small. Maybe too small. They're OK for finding something
I'm looking for. But the thumbnails aren't big enough to really see what's
there. In the last couple of rolls I scanned I've saved small images
(300x450). I can fit lots of those on a CD. I may change to that method, or
do both thumbnails and small files.

It takes time to organize things, but it's worth it. Also, I think twice
before snapping a frame. I have a difficult time throwing away bad negs (and
why I don't use a motor drive). I like to keep everything. I think
transparencies are much easier to handle than negs. But I seem to be
shooting mostly neg film, both color and obviously b/w.

Drowning in images is an apt metaphor sometimes.

Dave
