Different metering materials react differently to the varying frequencies
of light.  Charts of this are available in any of the standard photographic
textbooks, such as Stroebel, Compton, Current, and Zakia.  

I believe selenium most closely matches the response pattern of the average
photographic emulsion, meaning that, while it has drawbacks, it can produce
an accurate response if properly used.
