Subject: [Leica] RE: infra-red digital

I've experimented a little with my Canon D30 and a couple
of IR filters. I have a Leica (on topic!) R72 filter and
a Lee 87 gel which I have tried on the D30 and the results
are very acceptable. With any digital camera the results
will depend on how sensitive to IR the CCD/CMOS sensor is
and in the case of the D30 the answer is "not very", but it
does still work with extended shutter speeds. The results
with the R72 contain some colouration while the 87 results
are entirely monochromatic. Of course as the D30 is an
SLR, the visually opaque 87 filter makes a tripod essential
in order to focus and compose before adding the filter, as
do exposures of 1s at f/2 in bright sunlight.

On the subject of the UK dealer Robert White: I think it's
fair to say he is one of the most highly respected dealers
in the UK, and can often get things that other dealers
haven't even heard of. I needed a new lens board for my
LF camera a while ago, and wanted one with a non-standard
hole position. While most other dealers I tried hadn't
even heard of my camera, he was prepared to make the board
to the exact specification I wanted, but also knew which
"standard" boards would fit my camera off the shelf.
Highly recommended.

Simon.
