I don't use the self timer much but I think that the normal shutter release works even with the self timer tensioned. I do think that mine got 'sticky' a few years back and it came back to life with exercize. The self timers don't get used too much. Of course if yours has jumped a gear tooth or something I don't know what effect that may have. I don't think any question that is on-topic is too basic, although many have been asked before, but not this one. Enjoy your M4!
