With some creativity and judicious use of Windows OS level services, you can
make Javascript do just about anything you want to the client machine. You have
to be pretty clever, and you usually need a little cooperation from the user,
but it is possible, especially with ActiveX.

A lot of the recent internet worms used similar mechanisms that are acceisble
through e-mail extensions or whatever.
