Getting where I'm going intact with gear that's intact are my primary concerns; working conveniently out of the bag is secondary. A few caveats: photo backpacks (Tamrac, Tenba, Lowe) I've seen are well made, nicely balanced and fitted for sub-six-footers whose shoulders are narrower than mine (I'm a lanky six-two and wears 46 long suitcoat). Also, wheeled cases are nice -- where there's pavement. For major hauls, I use a regular hiking backpack and cram gear into a variety of well-padded Calumet pouches. Plusses: balance and camouflage. Minuses: lots of little bags and bits and pieces to keep track of stow, etc. I can live with this arrangement, but there must be a better way. Would even spring for a custom bag if someone reliable makes such things and understands the various factors involved. On- and off-list comments and recommendations appreciated.
