Subject: [Leica] Elmar Serial* puzzle

I purchased a 50mm f2.8 collapsible Elmar in M mount today. The serial#,
1141118 is, according to the Leica Pocket book from 1954. This lens was not
in production (from what I've read) until 1958.

Has anyone encounter this lens with a number this early? How di I explain this?
