Dear Luggers,
I took the above lens to Schmidt with my M6HM TTL and my
Summilux 50mm (for comparison) together with 5 pictures illustrating the
close
focusing problem chosen from the 5 rolls I have shot with the lens over the
last few days.
First I was very surprised to learn that the very helpful Ernest Cheung left
the
company at the end of last month so I had to deal with a new person - a
lovely
young lady named Cherry - who was willing to help but not very camera smart.
I had
her take the lens along to the technician and he couldn't find anything
wrong.
Then I had him check the camera focussing which was pronounced within spec.
This was to be expected since Solms had replaced the viewfinder last year.
However, finally in view of the picture evidence, Cherry said that Schmidt
would send
the lens back to Solms for further checking and repair if necessary. This
is now
underway - under warranty.
We shall see what Solms comes back with in about 6 weeks. It is my view
that the lens helicals
somehow are set up so that the lens focusses beyond the point of focus (too
close) at the
near focus end - but, of course, that doesn't explain why it focusses
correctly at infinity. It is one of those Leica mysteries.
Regards,
Howard Cummer.
