I think it is overkill for portraits.

For portraits you need to stop down to 5.6 to get enough depth of 
field and then .....

For portraits you do not need corners to be sharp and then.....

For portraits you do not really need supersharp  and then....

..... and then a  M 90mm 2.8 Tele Elmarit will do very nicely. It 
also costs less and weights less.

I have the M 90mm APO f2 ASPH and I used to have the M 90mm 2.8 Tele Elmarit.
