I have a first generation 1228, and use it with a Cullman ballhead
that weighs 360gm, is very smooth, compact and has pan action. If I
require a quick release, I use the Manfrotto #354 system, which is
compatible with another head I have. The good thing about the #354
system is that the camera plate can easily be ground down to a quite
small size to fit tidily under a Leica or other small camera.

The whole setup is all in reasonable proportion, with no obvious weak
link, and doesn't weigh too much.

As mentioned previously, the 1.5kg 1228 Gitzo is most directly
comparable to another Gitzo alloy tripod that weighs 2.2kg. What was
not mentioned is that the carbon fibre tripods generally can replace
even the next larger size tripod, as the rigidity and vibration
damping characteristics are so much better than those of the commonly
used alloys. So for most purposes my 1.5kg Gitzo replaces my 3 series
alloy tripod, which weighs over twice as much.

That is a big difference.
