They wouldn't have been as grainy though, which might have helped a little. The morals of that story for the client are: see representative samples first (preferably a complete wedding rather than cherry-picked photos), and never agree to just accept unprocessed film - it lets the photographer off the hook way too easily. The moral of the story for photographers is: don't screw around accepting professional assignments for a type of photography you don't thoroughly understand - you will hurt the reputation of the entire profession as well as your own.
