This is only my experience, perhaps others will have a differing opinion...

You can do it, but it is a PITA, and the results are variable. You have to
"guesstimate" where the demarkation line will fall relative to the image by
looking at the position of the filter in relation to the front of the lens,
and hope that this all lines up with what you think you're seeing in the
viewfinder. All in all, if you need a split filter often, use an SLR. If you
only need it occasionally with your M, then make sure you take several
shots, slightly re-positioning the filter for each shot.
