I realize and recognize that the proliferation and popularization of
color films in the pass few decades have made filters- persona non
grata. It is an ever widening movement among several camera groups I
belong to. But speaking from the perspective of the original question
and being an "old fart Black & White photographer", filters are still
the only way of modifying tonal values of red, green, and blue light.
So, with that in mind, let me recommend Leitz, Heliopan, or B&W filters.
Get the best you can afford, you get what you pay for.
