Go to a car supply store and look for a piece of PVC tubing (or even a Medical Supply Outlet - they have all kinds of plastic tubing). The critical part is that the inside diameter not "snag" the battery while in the tube and that anything else you put in there is not draining the battery. The simplest way is to wrap the batteries in Saran Wrap or use a small plastic bag and stick them in that. This also allows you something to grab when you want to pull the batteries out. If you use a piece of plastic tubing, you can close the top by cutting 4 slots in it and push it in to the cavity. The top of the bore is rounded so that the four "flaps" will fold against each other and prevent the battery from grounding against the metal.
