The recent 35-70/2.8 zoom scandal in fact boils down
to three words: GOODWILL, GREED and GRANDIOSITY.
But it is so intriguing that so many of you got mixed
up in the thread.

J Collier: GOODWILL misinterpreted as stumbling
block, but in fact only a stumbling block to the
realisation of someone else's greed. How nice a guy
to have in the LUG who did this not for his own
materialistic gain!

E Lowi: Simple GREED. Who wanted to strike the iron
when it’s still hot, and got himself burned.

J Yao: (1) GRANDIOSITY. No doubt he is a very rich
man: just think even if Leica sold him the zoom at the
original price of USD1.5k, cash upfront for 1000
lenses would be USD1.5M. But WHAT IF Leica really
agreed to his terms? Yao is a gray-market seller.
Would it be fair to all the authorized Leica agents in
the whole world? No man with a sound mind will
believe that he would keep all 1000 lenses. Did he
ever say he would sell it to fellow LUGgers with a
non-profit-making margin? Yes, he needn’t do that.
But then, you understand......

There is no problem with profit-making. It’s only his
grandiose overtones that made one feel uncomfortable:
remember he said in the past nearly any product will
come by should he increase the offer? This time his
monetary might could not get Leica to yield, and thus
his frustration and constant whining and denigratoty
remarks to Solms thereafter.

(2) GREED. At the time when he had not got this zoom,
I sympathized with his Leicaholic crave, because as he
said he "still missed one tool in his toolbox." But
when he’s got more than a dozen of it, and still wants
more, you understand.......... just simple user or
gray market seller?

Simon’s Cameras: GREED if they sold the lense to
someone who offered more. But what if they sold to
the final buyer at the same price? Just procedural
mistake?
