There are loads of well marketed mediocre products which are successful in
the market. There are few if any badly marketed but brilliant products in
the market. Leica was succesful whilst it had good marketing so the brand is
known now despite subsequent events.
I would say there is little evidence that all discontinued items were bad
and ample evidence that plenty of succesfully marketed products are junk.
Many consumers rely on advice but "caveat emptor" has been taken as a
justification by con men. (spin doctors)
