In addition to my dedicated 35mm film scanner I have an Epson Perfection 1640SU with the transparency adapter...got it for Xmas. I use it mainly with 6x6cm film and hardcopy (prints, books, magazines, etc.). It does a decent job with 35mm film as well and IMO makes a good all-round starter scanner. It has USB and SCSI ports (I use the latter). I think it's in your price range too. If you're interested only in scanning film I'd recommend something like the HP PhotoSmart S20...same price range, USB port, higher resolution, better overall image quality. - -Dave-
