Sharpness is not the only factor, and beyond a certain point it is, as you even said, a negligible factor. Some lenses are quite sharp in the center, and then fall off quite dramatically... Cripes, this is a Leica list, and half the list picks lenses by bokeh, rather than 'ultimate' sharpness.
